After being subjected to an unprovoked and violent attack by police in September this year (see video below), Brixton Buzz is pleased to see the charity book stall is now back in its spot outside the Iceland supermarket in Brixton Road.
In the action on Sept 2nd 2016, the book stall belonging to Black Child Promotions, run by Sulaiman Lee, Noel Kerr and Leonegus Darealest, was confronted by the police.
Two of the people on the stall were pepper-sprayed, arrested and taken into custody, with at least 10 police officers involved in an operation to target “unlicensed traders”.
A video believed to have been filmed a short time later then shows a violent struggle as at least six officers attempt to arrest Mr Lee.
In the melee, one of the officers clearly removes his pepper spray, aims it at the crowd and shouts: “Get back!”
The same officer then strikes several blows at the Mr Lee’s arm.
Separate footage then shows a man being escorted to a police van by dozens of officers, who are roundly booed by the crowd.
The pictures and video have sparked an angry response on social media with many questioning the police action.”
The incident prompted Lambeth Council leader to question the police tactics:
Very concerned at way yesterday's incident in Brixton was handled. Not acceptable. Speaking 2 Police to review & prevent happening again.
