In a truly bizarre case involving an industrial strength sphincter, prosecutors have announced that they have dropped their case against a suspected drug dealer who refused to use the toilet after allegedly swallowing substances.
Lamarr Chambers, 24, of Villa Road in Brixton, had been arrested during a police chase in Essex on the 17th January, with the police convinced that he had swallowed drugs to avoid prosecution.
As is often the case, police then held the suspect and waited for nature to take its course: except they hadn’t accounted for the colon-clenched determination of Mr Chambers.
Day after day went by and much to the cop’s chagrin, Chambers’ cheeks steadfastly refused to part.
As the days turned into weeks, the police kept extending his custody, confident that his nether regions would soon reveal all.
But Chambers was made of sterner stuff: it wasn’t long before he smashed the previous record of the most days in police custody without defecating – which had stood at 23 days – and soon his story started to be picked up by the national media.
With his cast-iron insides refusing to yield, police took medical and legal advice and released him after an astonishing 47 faeces-free days in custody, with the Crown Prosecution Service saying it had abandoned drug charges against him because of “insufficient evidence”.
However, his freedom was short-lived as Chambers was promptly rearrested on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of a Class A drug, and is now on bail.
