Here’s a short series of archive photos taken around the Brixton street markets fifteen years ago in December 2005, featuring scenes on Electric Avenue, Market Row, Pope’s Road, Electric Lane and Atlantic Road.
Closing time, Electric Avenue.
Festive decorations.
Busy morning market scene in Electric Avenue.
Animated Santa, Market Row.
A look down Electric Avenue from Atlantic Road.
A quiet Atlantic Road, with the much missed A&C Deli in the foreground.
The Footlocker store on the right was looted and burnt down in the disturbances in central Brixton in 2011. It now forms the first of a chain of no less than five mobile phone shops along that main shopping strip (although one is now in the process of relocating).
Electric Lane.
Towels for sale, Electric Avenue.
Pope’s Road used to be a lot busier than it is now.
