Opinion: We don’t need Section 60 stop & search – we need youth services

Police tape

Earlier this week, Brixton Buzz reported on the borough-wide implementation of Section 60, which gives the police powers to search anyone they fancy, without having to give a reason why.

ALL of Lambeth is now under a Section 60 stop and search order until 3am, Weds 7th Nov

There’s been plenty of reaction both on our chat forum and on social media and we’ve posted up two responses here which we think are worth reading:

Mark, Brixton: They can implement as many blanket section 60 stop and search orders across London Boroughs as they please, but that won’t tackle the issue of all the really important youth services that have been totally removed from London over the past two decades by local governments and greedy councils.

All the youth clubs, adventure playgrounds, family centres, play areas, open spaces (sold to developers), local hubs and community centres that did bring people together at an early age and got people rubbing up alongside one another in a positive way that made them familiar to one another and their families and friends, and built communities across estates and postcodes, are all gone, or going.

A lady who witnessed the murder on the Tulse Hill estate said yesterday ‘Where are our future doctors, and lawyers, and teachers, business owners, community workers, activists, sports stars? They are all being killed when they are just kids?’

Nicola: I run a community centre for youth with adventure playground. The funding for running sessions is almost non existent. We get just enough to run 10 hours a week.

To run a fully staffed week of activities in half term costs £3000 where are we supposed to get this x 11 weeks?

We provide a free service, the families we are catering to can’t afford it and if they have more than 1 kid it adds to the cost for them. I am trying to get businesses to sponsor a week or more and apply for funding but it’s hard. I’m not a ‘fundraiser’ its not my expertise.

Let’s hear your opinion
